Job Description:

NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Trade Paperback Reprints Assistant Production Editor oversees production of approx. 55 Trade paperback reprint editions of chapter books, novels, and nonfiction, as well as boxed sets and other collections of paperback editions of backlist titles, approx. 5 per year. Checks for quality assurance of text and illustrations at all stages of production leading to finished products. Responsible for keeping editors and designers on schedule. Oversees freelancers, for copyediting and proofreading of cover copy, typeset text, and covers.
Generates status reports and liaises with all members of the project teams to enforce best practices and schedules.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage book production for all conversion titles (previously printed hardcovers made into paperbacks), boxed sets (slipcase cover), and miscellaneous Trade original titles (as necessary but based on previously printed books), along with any associated editions, including: liaising with Editorial on deliverables, assigning and reviewing copy edits and proofreads of deliverables; liaising with Design on layouts and covers; trafficking materials among vendors, Editorial, and Design; and keeping all parties in sync with series consistency, schedules, and deliverables.

For high-profile or complex titles, adding additional steps such as supplemental meetings and documentation.

Create status reports and lead and/or participate in department and project team meetings; follow up on meeting results.

Qualifications
HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills

Strong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and juggling multiple projects

Strong computer skills – MAC preferred -- including facility with advanced functions of Adobe Acrobat

Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally with multiple project stakeholders

Experience: 2-3 years’ experience as a production editor at a trade publisher or equivalent; children’s book experience a plus.
